People Say You Shouldn’t Meet Your Heroes….Turns Out They’re Wrong

I had the most crazy out of body experience last week.  The Katie-Freaking-Couric Show asked me to be a guest on a show about bread winning mothers.  Yes that Katie-Freaking-Couric:  trail-blazing first female anchor of a national nightly news program,  single mother who bravely raised her daughters after losing her fist husband to cancer, America’s sweetheart, THAT ONE!  Because that kind of stuff happens to me, oh…never!  So before I had time to throw up from excitement, anxiety, or nerves I was in New York backstage at the Katie-Freaking Couric Show waiting for my time in front of the cameras.

And there was the nicest gal waiting backstage with me.  We started chatting like two longtime girlfriends.  I was admiring her fabulous outfit – she had a great black suit with white piping and was sporting a pair of sassy purple shoes (aren’t you glad I pay attention to the important things?).  We got to talking about why each of us were there and it turns out she was the reason for the whole show.  I was talking to none other than Carol Evans, President of Working Mother Media.  Again these kind of things happen to me well…never.  The show was focused on a research report that had just been released by Working Mother Media Research Institute about breadwinning moms and their attitudes about being in that role.  Absolutely fascinating and a must read if you are in that role or thinking about taking that role on:  http://www.workingmother.com

I have to tell you I was shocked Carol Evans was the woman I had been chatting with.  I just couldn’t get over the fact that this woman who is, let’s face it, a pretty big deal also happens to be well…normal.  Easy.  Funny. Down -to-Earth.  Aren’t big deal New York publishing mavens supposed to be well…bitchy?  Didn’t she read The Devil Wears Prada?  I should be shaking in my shoes not asking her where she got hers.  Like she’s a real person or something.

Flash forward to after the show because quite frankly it was such a rush I can’t remember a word I said.  Although I’m pretty sure I talked about my sex life with my husband and told a therapist that the women he interviewed who said women find men who do more housework less desirable were crazy.  Crazy is a medical term, no?

So after the show I’m about floating out of the studio I’m so euphoric and then Katie-Freaking-Couric herself says to us, “If you want pictures just wait until I finish up here.”  Um, yes.  Sign me up for that picture please.  Now her producer let’s us know Katie (in my mind we are totally on a first name basis now) has to be somewhere so just be mindful of the time.  Duly noted, I expected to have a quick picture and then go back to my quiet life in Arizona.  But Katie stayed and chatted with the small group who were left after taping (including my girl Carol Evans) and we talked about everything from how therapy is essential in a marriage to the dangers of helicopter parenting.  We were all real.  We were all vulnerable.  We were just a bunch of chicks dishing about what chicks dish about best.

So while this was a totally amazing experience for exactly the reasons I thought it would be – trip to New York and being on a talk show.  It was so much more than that because I met two extraordinary women who are out cheerleading for the rest of us.  And I can’t tell you how strong that makes me feel that there are women out there in positions of power who want to support the rest of us chicks.  We truly are not alone.
