  1. Having lost a parent while also trying to help coordinate care for the surviving parent, this really hit home. Women continue to be responsible for the majority of the invisible labor while earning less over our lifetimes because of either wage disparity or stepping out of the workforce to care for family. But, then we also usually live LONGER; how many women will outlive their money and end up in poverty? If they are fortunate enough to have an inheritance, will it be proportionate to offset their loss in income or savings? Rhetorical question, but there are big conversations that need to happen between adult children and aging parents so we can each prepare. We also need to address these disparities through systemic change.

We were fortunate in our situation, our parents had a Cadillac LTC insurance plan as well as other savings so we can continue to provide the level of care to meet Dad’s needs. My sister and I are educated and savvy women, it’s been challenging for US. We don’t know how families without similar resources manage because we have been driven to tears more than once trying to skin the bureaucratic onion.
